| HALEAKALA BIKE COMPANY All of our tours include: |
|
There are six companies that "bike down the volcano". Three of them all pretty much do it the same way. They'll pick you up at your hotel, feed you, take you up to the top of the mountain and bring you down in a convoy. You must wear motorcycle type helmets. You go as fast as the slowest person, no passing, and you get on and off the road when they say so. It's a totally guided experience. In any case, their full tours start at $89.00 and go up to $130.00 depending on whom you call. Our approach is to make the whole experience more affordable and offer more freedom of choice. There is no hotel pick-up. We meet at Haleakala bike shop at the Old Haiku Cannery near Makawao. We have a full service bicycle store at the foot of the mountain where you can leave your car. We do not feed you, there are wonderful Maui restaurants along the way. Our Maui courtesy van takes you up haleakala mountain. We furnish you with a nice, new Gary Fisher mountain bike, bicycle helmet, gloves, back pack, and rain/wind gear. After staging, we stay in touch for a time and then head back to the shop. In the case of our Sunrise/Summit tours, we spend a couple of hours in the National Park, mostly at the summit, viewing the crater, checking out the Haleakala Visitor Center and Summit House. We then do a van tour of of the park and put you on the bikes at the park entrance. You get started down the volcano and we go back to the store. You're on your own to come down the mountain at your own pace. Some of our clients go straight down to the Haiku store, we call them "shredders". Others make a day of it, it's your choice. Relax, stop often and take in the incredible views. The beauty of Upcounty Maui is breathtaking. |

SUNRISE TOUR Our most popular trip. The Sunrise Special Tour.. The Sunrise special leaves our store two hours before sunrise, arriving at Haleakala's 10,023' summit about an hour before sunrise. You watch the sun come up over the crater, a truly spectacular sight. Mark Twain described sunrise at the summit of Haleakala, "...the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed". Some call it the eighth wonder of the world, others call it a "power center". It is all that and more. At once forbidding and compelling, Haleakala National Park is Maui's main natural attraction. Just going up the mountain is quite an experience, let alone biking down! Nowhere else can you climb from sea level to 10,023' in less than an hour. At the summit, the 3,000' deep crater you peer down into is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide and 21 miles in circumference. Big enough to contain Manhattan! After your sunrise and summit experience, we do a van tour of the park and put you on the bikes at the park entrance. What lies before you is Maui's famous downhill. You drop 3,000' in 10 miles and curve around 29 switch backs. Stop often and enjoy the incredible vistas of west Maui surrounded by the Pacific. Below 4,000' you come to "upcountry Maui". Vegetable truck farms, protea farms, lodges, galleries and Kula botanical gardens. You have the option of expanding your day and including Keokea, the Chinese community, Tedeschi Winery and the Enchanted Gardens. Further down the mountain is Makawao town- Paniolo (cowboy) country. Boutiques, shops, and wonderful places to eat where you can stop and enjoy a liesurely meal. The Sunrise Special Tour. |
The Summit Deluxe leaves our store at 9:00 am and takes you to Haleakala's 10,023' summit for a view of the crater. You'll enjoy a van tour of the park and stage at 6500 feet where you are free to ride at your own pace back to the store. The Summit Deluxe. |
EXPRESS TOUR Our Express Tour leaves our store at 9:00 AM, and other times by arrangement. What makes this trip more affordable is that we don't include the two hour Haleakala National Park van tour that we do in our Sunrise And Summit tours. Otherwise the bike ride and equipment stay the same. If your focus is just a great bike ride down the volcano and you won't miss the crater tour or sunrise, then this is the trip for you. As with our other tours, there's no time limit, no timetable, no lines to keep. You go as fast or slow as YOU like.
